Born in Melbourne, Mr Muir’s formative years were spent working on the shop floor of his father’s retail business and studying economics and financial management. After graduating from University , Mr Muir worked at Coopers and Lybrand for three and a half years before moving back into the family business as a Financial Accountant. Mr Muir eventually took over as CEO in 1993, renamed the brand The Good Guys and established the talented team which built the enterprise into what is now Australia’s largest, privately owned, independent retailer.

 

Andrew Muir attended Harvard Business School’s seminal executive education course, The Advanced Management Program, in 2004. After completing the course and returning to Australia he became Executive Chairman and appointed Michael Ford as CEO

Andrew Muir currently serves as Executive Chairman of The Good Guys, Chairman of The Good Guys Foundation, Board Director for The Good Foundation, Board Member for the Essendon Football Club and is Co-Owner of Best Friends. Mr Muir is also a former Board Member of Starlight Foundation Victoria and a former Rotarian.

With more than 25 years of retail experience, Andrew Muir has a vast knowledge of the retail industry and private enterprise. Mr Muir is a successful retail and business leader, a highly sought after thought leader and a passionate philanthropist who believes in business, government and charities working together to support Australian communities.

Andrew Muir personally contributes to numerous community groups and regularly presents to business groups and tertiary institutions including the Mt Eliza Business School and Melbourne Business School. Mr Muir also provided advice and consultation to Professor Field Rickards, Dean Melbourne Graduate School of Education, in setting up their Centre of Positive Psychology.

Andrew Muir has been Executive Chairman of The Good Guys since 2005. Prior to his appointment as Executive Chairman, Mr Muir was CEO of the company from 1993 – 2004 and Financial Accountant from 1987 – 1993.

During his tenure as CEO, Andrew Muir led the company during a period of rapid growth, developed The Good Guys brand and created The Good Guys unique selling proposition, Pay Less Pay Cash. He also introduced the Joint Venture Partner model and successfully saw the company through fluctuations in the Australian economy and the threat posed by bigger competitors. In 2004 he became Executive Chairman and appointed Michael Ford as CEO.

As Executive Chairman, Andrew Muir still plays an active role in the strategic direction of the company, has an avid interest in the company’s brand program and is the driving force behind the company’s philanthropic program.

Andrew Muir has accepted numerous awards on behalf of The Good Guys in recent years including the inaugural Choice Magazine Retailer of the Year Award 2010, Canstar Customer Satisfaction Award (2011 – 2015), Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Award (2011 – 2014), International Customer Service Professionals Customer Satisfaction Award 2014, inaugural Reader’s Digest Quality Service Award 2014, ABA 100 Winner for Service Excellence and ABA 100 Winner for Community Contribution at the 2015 Australian Business Awards and The Retail Asia Pacific ‘Best of the Best’ Award 2014.

Andrew Muir has been Chairman of The Good Guys Foundation since it was established in 2010 and has been instrumental in determining the strategic direction of The Good Guys Local Giving Program which has donated over $8 million to local charity organisations across Australia so far.

Andrew Muir established The Good Foundation in 2010 and has been a Board Director since then. The Good Foundation is a charity that focuses on programs and projects that promote good health a nutrition. Andrew Muir was instrumental in bringing Jamie’s Ministry of Food to Australia in an effort to help fight the growing obesity problem in Australia.

Best Friends

2007 – present

Andrew Muir co-founded Best Friends in 2007 after identifying an opportunity in the Australian market. The development of the Best Friends Pet Care Centres was based on America’s leading chain Pet Smart, offering pet owners a one-stop-shop for all their pet needs including an onsite vet, grooming service and puppy school. Andrew is still actively involved in the business, the development of the brand and its expansion of stores across Australia.

Community Interests

Andrew Muir is a passionate philanthropist. At The Good Guys he set up The Good Guys Foundation and Local Giving Program that sees a donation from every transaction in-store and online donated back to local charities. To date The Good Guys Local Giving Program has donated more than $8 million to more than 150 charities across Australia.

From his desire to act on Australia’s growing obesity program, Andrew Muir established The Good Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that develops and runs programs and projects that promote good health and nutrition and with the assistance of The Good Guys, brought Jamie’s Ministry of Food to Australia.

In 2015, with the support of CircusOz, Andrew Muir launched The Good Guys Super Hero Academy, a new philanthropic program designed to use circus as a format to teach positive lessons and character building skills to primary school aged children, enabling them to discover their inner super hero strengths and capabilities.

Andrew Muir has also been heavily involved with the Rotary Foundation for many years. He was a Rotarian with Essendon Rotary for nine years and has made many contributions to various Rotary projects over the years. Mr Muir was recently recognised for his contribution with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Andrew Muir has also supported other programs such as Neighbourhood Watch, helped fund the Starlight Foundation Room at The Royal Children’s Hospital and provided support to the Paralympic Training Base in Tullamarine.
